Exploring the Ionian Sea by Yacht: Highlights and Hidden Gems

The Ionian Islands are among the most popular sailing locations in the world, and they are located off the western coast of mainland Greece. The six major islands in the area are Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Zakynthos, Ithaca, and Paxos. This archipelago is unique due to its Venetian architecture, dense pine and cypress trees, shingle beaches, calm blue waters, and amazing wildlife like the Caretta-caretta sea turtle (or loggerhead). By renting a sailing boat, you may take advantage of the stunning pebble and sand beaches, the many coves and caves, and the fascinating history.

Corfu

The Ionian group’s northernmost island, Corfu, is close to Italy. It is the lushest of all the Greek islands, with a lavish setting of fragrant wildflowers and cypress trees. Corfu’s ancient town is a UNESCO world heritage site filled with gorgeous Venetian structures, fortifications, and quiet squares. Anchor your sailboat at Gouvia Marina, the island’s main marina and the best place since it offers many of the best facilities for you and your boat and explore the island. Agios Stefanos is also a great place to set anchor since this small bay is protected by the winds and has a lot of taverns and bars.

DIAPONTIA ISLANDS

Take the northwest route to the Diapontia Islands, Mathraki, Erikoussa, and Othoni by untying the lines at the Gouvia marina dock. In the furthest westernmost region of Greece, three little islets are endowed with unmistakable untamed beauty.  Anchor your yacht at Plakes harbour when you get to Mathraki Island. From there, you can enjoy swimming and tanning at Portelo, a sandy white beach. You’ll also be amazed by the northwest coast seabed, which will make your scuba-diving experience unique. You will enjoy the magnificent Bragini beach on the perfectly circular island of Ereikoussa. You can only visit Othoni’s stunning bays and unspoiled beaches by boat and it definitely won’t disappoint you!

Paxos

Of the major Ionian Islands, Paxos is the smallest. It is distinguished by serene coastlines, cozy harbours, and its charming capital, Gaios, with its pink, cream, and whitewashed red-tiled homes. The nearby little islet Antipaxos, which is home to the well-known Voutoumi beach, is a must-see when visiting Paxos. Apart from the main port of Paxos, Gaios, you can also moor at Lakka Bay, a beautiful, little harbour ideal for food and drinks.

LEFKADA

It is a hilly island with olive trees and lovely green woodlands. The white beaches in Lefkada, which include the well-known Egremni, Kathisma, and Porto Katsiki, are recognized for their turquoise and emerald seas. The Santa Maura bridge, which connects Lefkas Town to the mainland, opens every hour to let boats sail over the artificial canal between the North and South Ionian seas. Both the municipal quay and the reputable Lefkas Marina are options for mooring in Lefkas Town. There are also other stunning islets nearby that are well-liked by yachters, such as the Prigkiponisia, a dreamy island complex.

MEGANISI

In contrast to Nydri, Lefkas, Meganisi is a scenic island covered in thick greenery with three communities (Spartochori, Vathi, and Katomeri) and lovely beaches. The perfect location for the most restful summer vacations is created by the historic architecture, the friendly locals, the quiet lifestyle, the breathtaking scenery, the bays with the fish taverns and amusement businesses, the lush surroundings, and the crystal clear seas. One of Meganisi’s main ports, Porto Spilia, is teeming with small craft and private yachts. It is a delightful must-visit area of the island.

KEFALONIA

The largest Ionian island is Kefalonia. Mt. Ainos (1520 m), lush green woods, currant vineyards, olive orchards, wild colorful flowers, and majestic caverns like Melissani are just a few of the landscape’s stunning and varied features. Throughout the island, there are several stunning beaches with white sand and turquoise waters, and a boat may be used to find many secluded bays tucked between high limestone cliffs. Fiskardo, on the island’s northernmost tip, is one location that may draw sailors of all skill levels, while Assos village, to the east, also acts as a gathering spot for sailors looking for secure anchorages.

ITHACA

A pristine island called Ithaca is located near Kefalonia. Being the fabled hero of Odysseus’ long-lost home, it is well-known. Its breathtaking beauty is made up of lush mountains, towering cliffs, and deep emerald bays. The island is distinctive and attractive and makes a great sailing destination because of its many little harbours and fishing communities. The harbour of Vathy, the island’s capital and main settlement, is located on the southern branch of the Bay of Molos. The Lazaretto Islet, also known as the “Island of the Saviour,” defends Vathy’s major harbour, which is located at the bottom of a large bay and offers a secure and welcoming haven.

ZAKYNTHOS

The Ionian group’s southernmost island, Zakynthos, is situated close to the Peloponnesian shore. It is highly recognized for both its enigmatic marine caverns and fine sand beaches. There are several beautiful beaches with transparent blue water, including the Navagio beach where the renowned shipwreck is located. The stunning blue cave, which can only be reached by boat, is another must-see. Zakynthos is highly well-liked among tourists in general and yacht charterers since it provides the ideal sailing environment thanks to its stunning landscape and top-notch bathing beaches. There is a marina on the jetty in Zakynthos’ large port where you may get whatever supplies you need for yourself or your boat.
